How to Use ChatGPT

Before we begin, if you have never used ChatGPT or don’t have your own account, we will quickly cover the basics of setting it up, and how it works. If you already have an account, you can skip this section and dive right into the prompting tips.

  1. Making Your ChatGPT Account: If you don’t have an account already, you will need to create one to start asking questions. Creating an account is very straightforward—simply sign up here, requiring basic information such as your name, email address, and password, or you can use social logins.

  2. Ask Your Questions: Once you have signed up, you should see a simple dashboard that contains the chat screen with the message box at the bottom of the page, where you can type your question or prompt. Here are a few ideas you can use:

  3. Get a Response from ChatGPT: Once you have submitted a question, ChatGPT will generate an answer based on it, and you will see it appear in the chat window.

  1. Interact:

    • You can ask as many things as you like to keep the conversation going.
    • If you are not happy with your answer, you can click regenerate to produce a different answer.

Suggestions for Better Results

  1. Be Clear and Specific: When you write a prompt, imagine you are giving a task to someone who just joined your startup. They have no idea about your product or service or what you want to achieve with the task, so it is crucial to be specific about what you are asking. This will help ChatGPT output the type of answer you are looking for.

  2. Provide Context: You can imagine ChatGPT is a fresh graduate that has the skills to do the job but knows very little about your company. To help ChatGPT understand your task, it helps to provide some context.

Using ChatGPT to Write an Elevator Pitch

Having a pitch is crucial for any startup, as it clearly defines your vision and mission and clarifies your unique value proposition. It is much easier to engage with potential investors or buyers when they fully understand what your company does.

As a founder, you will pitch your startup countless times, and to be effective, your pitch must be clear and concise. Creating a compelling pitch, or “the perfect pitch” that engages your audience typically takes time and many iterations, and from our experience, it can take weeks or months to refine.

With the help of ChatGPT, you can save valuable time and produce a polished pitch that effectively communicates your startup’s vision.

We got some inspiration and tips from Y Combinator and have put together a prompt that you can use to streamline this process and quickly generate a clear and concise pitch.

ChatGPT Prompt for Elevator Pitches

This prompt will help you extract important information and create three different versions of your pitch. That way, you can find what style resonates with you or your target audience much quicker! If you want to put it to the test, copy the text below and paste it into ChatGPT.

“You are an amazing business strategist with great communication skills that specialize in crafting compelling elevator pitches. I need you to ask me a series of questions about my business.

These questions should uncover the following details:

  • What we do: there is no need to set up the problem, just help to get to the point.
  • What is our unique insight: similar to “What problem are you solving”, but really understand what you know about the problem that other people don’t.
  • The reason behind its creation.
  • How it works.
  • Its competitive advantages.
  • Its main benefits.
  • What do you want: Make it easier for others to help you. There is no need to dance around the ask—if you want people to invest, ask; if you have a question, ask.

You need to slowly extract the information from me, so you will ask these questions one at a time, as if you were interviewing me and taking notes.

Once you have all the information you need, you will write the elevator pitches. Please write three elevator pitches following different templates. Write them as a short paragraph—I need to deliver these pitches in 1 minute or less.

Template 1: Empathy-Product-Value “Have you ever experienced [Problem Statement]? It’s frustrating and [Pain Points]. We created [Product/Service] to fix this issue because [Unique Value Proposition]. Unlike existing solutions, our product [Why It’s Better]. We’ve achieved [Key Metrics] and our team is dedicated to solving this problem effectively. We’re seeking [Amount] to [Purpose of Funding].”

Template 2: Task-Benefit-Call to Action “Our product helps people [Task] better. It works by [How It Works] and is superior because [Why It’s Better]. If you don’t use our product, you’ll continue facing [Downside]. Our traction includes [Key Metrics] and our skilled team is driving this forward. We’re seeking [Amount] to [Purpose of Funding]. Act now to experience the benefits.”

Template 3: Story-Product-Vision “We noticed [Problem Statement] and created [Product/Service] to solve it with [Unique Value Proposition]. Our business model is [Revenue Model]. We’ve gained traction with [Key Metrics] and achieved [Milestones Achieved]. Our experienced team is driving our vision of [Vision Statement]. We’re seeking [Amount] in funding to achieve [Purpose of Funding].”

In this small guide we just looked at how we can get some help from ChatGPT to craft a compelling pitch. However ChatGPT’s capabilities go beyond this use case. From creating engaging pitches to help you come up with new ideas to make your business grow, sky is the limit, you just need to be creative!

ChatGPT is very good at adapting to the task you provide, so don’t be afraid of trying with different prompts and modifying the templates provided above to tailor them for your specific use case.
